What are the skin benefits of antioxidants?

There’s a ton of info out there about antioxidants, so it can be tough to know exactly what they are or how they work. We’re here to explain a little more about what they do, where you can find them, and why they’re so great for your skin.

Let’s start with what they are.

Antioxidants are molecules that prevent or delay cell damage by attacking free radicals. Our bodies naturally produce both free radicals and antioxidants but when these levels become imbalanced, a state called oxidative stress can occur.

Oxidative stress isn’t something we want knocking around. It can damage our DNA, increase the risk of illnesses such as diabetes, heart diseases, and cancer, and fast track the aging process.

Many factors increase oxidative stress including air pollution, cigarette smoke, alcohol intake, toxins, high blood sugar levels, high intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids, and excessive sunbathing.

How does oxidative stress affect our skin?

Oxidative stress breaks down collagen, weakens the skin’s barrier, and can trigger inflammation. A few things we’d definitely like to avoid. But it’s not all doom and gloom. With an extra splurge of antioxidants, we can prohibit free radical production and our skin can be better protected.

Antioxidants also helps reduce sun spots, minimize fine lines and wrinkles, calm acne breakouts, and even out blotchy-looking skin. And as if that wasn’t enough, many antioxidants also provide hydration by increasing moisture retention so dull-looking skin can look brighter and more revitalized.

Where can you find them?

By now, you’ve probably realized that if there's one category of skincare ingredients you can never have too much of, it’s antioxidants. Our Superberry Serum combines an array of delicious fruits to give your skin a serious dose of barrier-boosting protection. Cherry kernel oil (especially high in polyphenols, anthocyanins and cyanidin) helps fight cellular damage and reduce inflammation. Blackberry seed oil (a rich source of vitamin C) is an all-time favorite for boosting collagen production, fading sunspots and helping reduce acne. Combined with apricot, cranberry, grape, rosehip and blue Tandy, this serum is a potent blend of superberry goodness.

Now we're not suggesting you go replacing your five-a-day for an extra large dose of Superberry Serum. We all still need to eat, sleep and exercise well to maintain our skin health too. But, if you want to give your skin an extra boost of TLC…then, by all means, why not indulge in a little friendly skincare.
